Baikal — Pure Chalice Of Our Planet

Global campaign for ecology organised by the Arya Sangha Association of Buddhist Communities (Russia)

Increasingly, leaders of various spiritual traditions are calling for people to awaken and change their relationship to the Earth, our only home, which is so fragile and precious. In Buddhism, cause and effect and interdependence are the central teachings, and we understand how important it is to place the right intention at the heart of all actions. This is why we are launching a project aimed to build the right intention in people’s minds and to develop practical steps to change the situation regarding respect for nature.

Why Baikal?

The Arya Sangha Association is a Russian organization, and we are acutely aware of Baikal’s value in our country’s ecosystem. But Baikal’s value and influence extends much further; many scientists recognize Baikal’s influence on ecosystems throughout the world. The Association has a long and strong connection with Lake Baikal; in 2005 we built a Buddhist Enlightenment Stupa on the island of Ogoi, which has been bringing a piece of harmony to the relationship between man and nature for 15 years.

Interfaith Dialogue as a Tool

In 2016, at the invitation of the Association, Baikal and Buryatia were visited by the Head of the Drikung Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism, His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. In addition to being the Head of the Drikung Kagyu School, His Holiness is actively engaged in Interfaith dialogue, the environmental agenda and is a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations.

His Holiness is also a member of the Faith for the Earth Campaign, which brings together spiritual leaders of various traditions worldwide to urge heads of state to respond urgently to the threats of climate change and ensure the transition to renewable energy by 2050. His Holiness is enthusiastically engaged in the sustainability projects mentioned above, both as a response to environmental challenges and spiritual practice. In his own words, “Today we monks are in action”!

His Holiness always points to the importance of interreligious and intercultural dialogue and tries to unite efforts to restore the Earth. During his trip to Baikal, he met with the shamans of Transbaikalia. The meeting result was a joint memorandum based on concern for what is happening to the Earth and the intention to unite to achieve practical goals.

The first step of the project was a conference where participants and spiritual leaders discussed the first meeting’s issues. Besides, ecologists and scientists spoke at the meeting. As a result of these discussions, we agreed to hold an interfaith prayer service on April 22nd, proposed by H.S. Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang. We also decided to continue the communication to develop a plan that would change the current state of affairs and bring the common intention of protecting the Earth to practical steps.

Significantly, the conference was held at a time of the coronavirus pandemic, which many spiritual leaders say is essentially an imbalance of nature resulting from our shared home’s mishandling. On the one hand, the pandemic made personal contact difficult, but it accelerated the process of dialogue.

From intention to action

The most important thing from a Buddhist perspective is establishing the right intention, which then flows into the right action and leads to the proper result. We hope that the conditions will converge for the world prayer service that His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon has proposed as a result of the conference. The prayer service will unite people of different traditions and cultures with a shared intention. By laying down the right intention, we will be sure that we act for the same good purpose.

Global Medicine Wheel Action — message from H.H. Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang

From Father of the Sky to Mother of the Earth

Many scientists are now discussing quantum theories and want to prove them, all are trying to make the human mind accept and understand the different dimensions of the world. However, many statements have been recorded in Buddhist scriptures, enough to explain what people are trying to understand. In the shaman’s cognition, it has already surpassed the dimension where we live.

So when we spiritual leaders and the heads of various tribes or guardians of the four elements on the earth gather to talk about how to protect the earth, we are talking about how to raise the overall consciousness of mankind. How to heal the earth with quantum theories and idea transmission.

The Drikung Kagyu has more than 200 centers and temples around the world, and there are also many shamans all over the world, if we can meet on line at the same time and do different ceremonies to pray for the earth and transform human consciousness. We can choose one text to pray, and maybe some shamans can play drums and sing, or do the fire ceremony…and so on.

Everyone has their own puja for the Earth. This will be the greatest blessing for the world in the beginning of 2021. It is our responsibility as spiritual leaders, to raise human nature awareness is the source of protecting the environmental nature.
